2015 When Work Works Award Winners

    California Employers Honored for Excellence in Workplace Effectiveness

    California State Council of SHRM, a Community Partner of “When Work Works”, is honored to announce the California Employers named as winners of the 2014 When Work Works Award (formerly known as the Alfred P. Sloan Award.)

    Twelve California workplaces have distinguished their organizations among employers with flexible innovative solutions, practices and policies.  Many of the winners offer their employees flexible scheduling such as compressed workweeks, financial support for tuition and training, and phased retirement. They also have developed unique practices that fit the needs of their organization and employees.

    “CalSHRM is delighted and proud to see these California employers awarded for their innovative work flex strategies proving flexibility in the California work place can be embraced and implemented to provide a competitive advantage!" said Mike Letizia, PHR-CA, California State Director.

    Among the top 25 winners in the United States was TopDown Consulting, Inc. of San Francisco, an all-virtual organization whose employees live in locations that suit their family and lifestyle needs. A total of 284 U.S. workplaces were honored with the award. Given by Families and Work Institute and the Society for Human Resource Management, the When Work Works Award Winners are identified through a rigorous two-step selection process, which involves an evaluation of employers’ programs and practices and a confidential employee survey that also asks employees about other aspects of the workplace known to lead to employee engagement.

    “These award-winning employers have embraced workplace flexibility as a business strategy, which, in turn, has helped them reduce turnover and improve employee engagement,” said Lisa Horn, director of SHRM’s Workplace Flexibility Initiative. “These employers provide a roadmap for others interested in helping their businesses compete and their employees navigate work/life needs.”
